Small business Internet marketing doesn’t involve building websites and hoping that customers just miraculously find you.

Visitors will only be interested if the owner of the site updates it on a consistent basis.  Providing new content on regular basis will lead to new visitors and repeat visits.  Here are two vitally important tips for small business Internet marketing that will start you down the path of a high traffic website.

Keyword Research For Small Business Internet Marketing

The key to any successful website these days is the careful selection of keywords for the pages and content on the site.   Many new bloggers and article marketers approach keyword research in a general sense.  For example, you decide to sell “shoes”.  You will be competing against websites such as Zappos and they have millions to spend on web development.  A better strategy is to look for an underused segment or “niche” inside that overall heading of shoes, as an example “pink stilettos”.  This keyword is an example of what is called a “long tail keyword” or “keyword phrase” and will generally get you further up the page ranking than just using “shoes”.  Google’s Keyword tool is ideal to find under-used phrases or long tail keywords.

If you put in the words “leather shoes”, Google will display a list of phrases built around that phrase and also tell you how often a particular phrase is searched on a monthly basis.  It is a good free tool to start out with, but eventually you will want to look into more robust (paid) keyword research tools (drop me an email and we can talk about the one I use).

The Google keyword tool will return phrases like “red leather shoes”, “where to buy leather shoes” etc, and it will be up to you to choose which long-tail keyword phrases to use.  It’s best to go for somewhere in mid range of search phrases, say 500 to 3000 / month, but keep in mind that generally the more searches for a particular keyword, the greater the competition would be (obviously, this varies and you might find a hidden gem with almost no competition). Your aim is to get on page 1 of Google’s search results which isn’t easy, despite what a lot of marketing “gurus” tell you.

Content For Small Business Internet Marketing

Google favors regularly updated web sites.  I.E.  Content should be added regularly.

It is vital for one to develop the practice of writing articles that have good on page SEO (search engine optimization).  The article should be rich in keywords.  The keywords should be used within the first and last paragraphs of the article.  Generally, you want to shoot for a keyword density of 1 to 2%…don’t worry this is not difficult to do, you just make sure to sprinkle your keyword throughout the article/post.

This is obviously not an all encompassing list when it comes to small business internet marketing.  This is a baseline for getting your site daily traffic.
